This morning our Arlington Library was filled with warm discussion and collaborative brainstorming during our first Book Club session.

We all enjoyed a cup of tea (and a macaron!) with fellow families and staff, whilst participating in a gentle discussion around our first book; New York Times Bestseller ‘The Whole-Brain Child’ by Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., and Tina Payne Bryson, PhD.

This book is recommended for parents with children aged Kindergarten to Year 7 and covers twelve revolutionary strategies to nurture your child’s developing mind.

We are grateful to Preshil Parent and professional Clinical Psychologist, Clare Canty, who was on hand to answer parent and guardian questions. Thank you to Parent Education Committee Chair, Jessica Halpagoda, and our kind host and discussion leader, Angelica Brody.

The discussion was enlightening and one parent shared how comforting it was to know that we are not alone! Parenting is a shared, societal endeavour.

It was agreed that our chosen book ultimately attempts to distil human relationships and articulate how we can relate to one another. We also agreed that this book promotes and supports forming genuine, meaningful relationships with your children, ultimately towards the shared goals of creating empathetic and kind human beings that have the capacity to find fulfilment as individuals and adults. We also considered the dichotomy between the chaotic and logical parts of our brain and how our own upbringings can often influence or inform our reactions as parents.

Thank you to our Arlington Librarian who also shared some great resources for our children to use when learning about their emotions.

Thank you to all involved, we look forward to seeing everyone at the next session in Term 4!
