I am thrilled to share the exciting progress and unique learning opportunity that our theatre students recently had during a stage design workshop led by an esteemed industry professional. This term, our Theatre students Baylee and Aimee were lucky enough to work with set designer and illustrator extraordinaire, Andrew Plant. Andrew has designed and constructed sets for over 100 productions.

This workshop has been a transformative experience for our students as they delved into the intricacies of stage design and learned from a seasoned expert in the field. Andrew brought a wealth of knowledge and experience, sharing insights, techniques, and industry secrets that have left a lasting impact on our students’ understanding of stage design.

Throughout the workshop, our students explored the creative process involved in designing and constructing captivating stage sets. They learned about the importance of concept development, research, sketching, and collaboration in bringing a director’s vision to life. Andrew guided them through the various stages of design, encouraging them to think critically, experiment with ideas, and embrace innovation. As Andrew told our students, “Smaller spaces are never a weakness to designing sets; the limitations in fact give me more ideas and creativity.”

Under the guidance of Andrew, our students embarked on hands-on activities and practical exercises, gaining valuable skills in set design, prop creation, and spatial arrangement. They learned to consider elements such as lighting, color, texture, and scale to create visually striking and functional stage environments that enhance the overall theatrical experience.

Beyond technical skills, this workshop also emphasized the importance of teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Our students worked collaboratively, brainstorming ideas, sharing feedback, and overcoming challenges together. This experience not only honed their artistic abilities but also nurtured essential life skills that will serve them well beyond the theater.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to Andrew for generously sharing his expertise and inspiring our students with his passion for stage design. His guidance has been instrumental in expanding our students’ artistic horizons and instilling in them a deeper appreciation for the transformative power of visual storytelling.

I would also like to commend our students for their enthusiasm, dedication, and willingness to explore new artistic territories. Their creativity, commitment, and openness to learning were wonderful throughout this workshop. I am immensely proud of their growth as aspiring stage designers and the remarkable progress they have made.

As we move forward, the skills and knowledge gained from this workshop will undoubtedly inform and elevate our students’ future theater productions. I am excited to witness their continued artistic growth and the imaginative stage designs that they will bring to life.
