The International Chemistry Quiz (ICQ) is a unique chemical education activity. It provides a major focus for secondary school students on the relevance of chemistry in an exciting and stimulating way. The Royal Australian Chemistry Institute invites all students to participate in the ICQ.
The ICQ aims to promote interest in chemistry and the role of chemists in our society. The ICQ is not a nationwide assessment of chemistry knowledge, but rather an opportunity to promote Chemistry and for teachers to gauge the understanding their students have of the subject.
The ICQ is truly international with papers translated into seven different languages. The Quiz attracts students throughout Australia and 20 other countries around the world, including India, Germany and China. The Quiz consists of 30 multiple choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes, either in paper format or online.
Students in multiple years studying Chemistry were given the opportunity to take part in this quiz to extend their curiosity and understanding of Chemistry. Hamish, Year 8, describes his experience:
I think I learned a lot from the experience. We had only touched on some of the topics in class but I was able to use my prior tasks and knowledge from class to push myself a little further than I realised I could go. As I waited for the results to come in I reflected on how much I enjoy chemistry and all of the various different processes that come with that field. I’m definitely looking forward to doing more chemistry in the future!
Four of our students received excellence awards for their achievements. We congratulate Hamish (Year 8), Manny (Year 10), Zac (Year 8) and Jacques (Year 10).
