Drawing on a tradition developed over 85 years, students at Preshil are encouraged to see themselves as musical creators right from the Kindergarten. Experimentation, teamwork and a respect for individual expression manifest themselves in music classes from age 3 and enable students to develop their unique musical voices. Emphasis is placed upon participation and commitment to daily practice, group ensembles, casual performances and special events such as participation in the Live Music Is Good For You festival at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, doorstep gigs and our annual jazz and classical evenings.
We see music as a craft refined over years and supported by peers, school and families. It is not about perfection, rather about a genuine engagement and desire to express ourselves in this beautiful way. We are fortunate to have absolute support for music at all levels of the school.
Our cohort chooses different foci at various times and while we always seem to have a strong strings and songwriting emphasis, we have students playing a wide range of instruments and the instrumental music program to support this.
