Our Teachers

Small School Benefits

Preshil has a deliberate strategy to maintain a low student/teacher ratio and small class sizes which allows for team teaching, collaborative learning, multi-aged groupings and strong support for individual students. We attract vibrant teachers who are excited to be at a school where they can really engage with their students, get to know them and help them to flourish as learners.

Role Models

Preshil teachers are highly qualified individuals who share fundamental traits essential to Preshil’s approach to teaching:

  • Empathetic
  • Flexible
  • Passion for and about learning
  • Regard and concern for children
  • Reflective
  • Kind and patient
  • Modelling all of these behaviours for our young people

Teacher | Student Relationships

At Preshil, learning is shaped through rich, meaningful experiences that spark curiosity and connection.

Our teachers build relationships grounded in trust and mutual respect, creating classrooms where students feel safe to be themselves. In that space, students are encouraged to question, explore ideas, and step beyond their comfort zones, supported every step of the way.

We see young people as active participants in their learning. Each student brings their own experiences, perspectives, and creativity, and our teachers work alongside them to shape learning together.

By understanding each child and fostering strong, supportive relationships, Preshil teachers create a culture of collaboration, confidence, and genuine engagement.

Professional Development

At Preshil, we invest in our teachers as active learners, recognising that great education depends on a culture of continual growth.

Our Professional Development Program supports every staff member to deepen their knowledge, refine their practice, and stay responsive in a rapidly changing educational landscape. Opportunities are accessible to all, ensuring a consistent and high standard of teaching across the school.

This work is closely aligned with Preshil’s Strategic Plan. Professional learning is shaped by both the needs of the school and the individual, supporting career development, adapting to evolving roles, and strengthening the practice of contemporary education.

Our Students

The children who thrive at Preshil are independent and creative learners who want the most from their school. They seek to personalise their learning, feel respected by their teachers, and be offered freedoms within which they are capable of managing. Our community of learners is dynamic and collaborative and the learning is conceptually driven.

Preshil students are independent and self-directed. They take responsibility for their learning, their actions, and their role in the life of the school, supported by teachers who provide guidance when it is needed.

They are confident in expressing their ideas and perspectives, engaging with curiosity and creativity. Rather than relying on rules, they develop an internal sense of discipline, guided by respect for themselves and others, with teachers there to support and guide this growth.

Preshil students value difference. They understand that fairness is not sameness, and approach others with openness, empathy, and respect. Strong relationships with peers and teachers are central to their experience.

They are adaptable and comfortable with change, able to navigate a dynamic learning environment. They think deeply, embrace complexity, and remain open to new ideas and perspectives, with teachers supporting them as they grow.

Preshil children understand that relationships can be unpredictable, and that sometimes friendships are challenging to navigate. They are responsive and open to the processes of restorative justice, perspective taking, and setting things to rights for all parties.

Preshil students understand that deep learning happens together. They actively collaborate with peers to question, explore, and build understanding, knowing that learning is something they shape, not receive.

They take ownership of their learning, recognising the connection between effort and growth. They approach all learning with purpose, whether it comes easily or challenges them.

Preshil students look for ways to make learning meaningful. They embrace mistakes, value the process, and keep going, supported by a mindset that effort leads to progress.

Our Families

Parents and guardians are an important part of the Preshil community. They contribute to the life of the school in many ways, from volunteering at events to supporting one another and sharing experiences.

We know families lead full lives, balancing work, study, and caring responsibilities. Our parent community is designed to be flexible and welcoming, allowing people to be involved in ways that suit them. New volunteers are always welcome.
