Welcome to another exciting week at Preshil.

We hope you enjoy reading about activities across our Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary campuses.

Yalda Night Shared at Recent Whole School Meeting

Shima Bayat, a Laboratory Technician from Blackhall, joined us at Arlington for our Whole School Meeting.

Shima had sent an email to staff wondering if Winter Solstice was a tradition at the school, just as Yalda Night is within Persian Culture. We invited Shima to join our Whole School Meeting so we could share our traditions together. We discovered that there are lots of similarities in our festivities. Shima also shared that poems are read from Divan-e Hafez and interpretations made for the year ahead. We thought about our tradition growing too; maybe good wishes and hopes could become part of our Winter Solstice Celebrations.

Only a Few Tickets Left for Hadestown

There are still a few remaining tickets for the upcoming Hadestown production. Due to overwhelming demand, we've added a matinee on Saturday 1 August, 2.00pm. If you missed out, this is your last chance to experience the show. Secure your tickets before they're gone below.

VCE Drama Students Take of Armin Greder's The Island

This week, our Unit 1 VCE Drama students presented their devised Physical Theatre take of Armin Greder's "The Island". Through powerful ensemble performances, they explored the complex themes of refuge, belonging and the impact of exclusion and othering. The students also managed their own lighting and sound throughout the production. Congratulations to all involved on thoughtful, moving and highly successful performances!

Waring (Wombat) Season at Arlington

The kindergarten children are diving deeply into exploring the Waring (Wombat) season.

They are using their senses and natural materials to investigate and represent their understandings of this time of year. The program encourages children to engage in process-based art experiences that promote free exploration, experimentation, discovery, connections and shared learning.

As part of this journey, the kindergarten community is preparing for the Winter Solstice afternoon tea on the 25th of June. This event will be a celebration of community and a showcase of the children’s ideas, expressed through their artistic creations.

VCE VM Guest Speaker Alumni - Nutritionist Carla Veith-Carter

This week, the Vocational Major students welcomed Preshil alumna and nutrition consultant Carla Veith-Carter to share her expertise on healthy changes that could be made to the school's canteen program.

Carla, a passionate keto coach and experienced public speaker, introduced students to the National Healthy School Canteens Guidelines and encouraged them to analyse the recommendations from a professional perspective. The session provided valuable insights into the role of nutrition in promoting student wellbeing and challenged students to think critically about how healthy food choices can be incorporated into a school setting.

Former Preshil Teacher, Lenny Robinson Awarded the 2026 UQP Quentin Bryce Award for Literature

We are delighted to share that former Preshil VCE, IB and Philosophy teacher Lenny Robinson has been awarded the 2026 UQP Quentin Bryce Award for Literature for her debut novel, And in the Morning.

Presented by University of Queensland Press and selected by former Governor-General Dame Quentin Bryce, the award celebrates books that honour women’s lives and promote gender equality. Dame Quentin praised the novel as a “gloriously written, intricate and thought-provoking work of historical fiction” that explores the impact of war on women’s lives and contributions.

Lenny is a much-loved member of our community, teaching from 2001–2019. This is a wonderful and richly deserved achievement, and one we know many current and former members of the Preshil community will be thrilled to celebrate.

Winter Sol

As the days grow shorter, our annual Winter Solstice celebration brings warmth, light and community to our Arlington campus.

Students spend weeks creating beautiful paper lanterns before gathering for a parade that winds through the school grounds, illuminating the evening with colour and creativity. Families contribute homemade soups to share, creating a generous community feast, while twinkling lights transform the campus into a magical landscape. A bonfire becomes the heart of the celebration, drawing people together to connect, reflect and families gather in the hall for musical performances from students of all ages.

Join us for this much-loved Preshil tradition - families from K-12 are all welcome.
